Volvo Cars reinforces commitment in South Carolina
A legacy spanning decades, South Carolina’s reputation as an automotive powerhouse is accelerating full speed ahead. The Palmetto State is home to more than 600 automotive-related companies, ranging from original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and tire manufacturers to an impressive network of suppliers.
With convenient access to international ports and infrastructure, automotive companies globally have found that South Carolina is the ideal location to base manufacturing and assembly operations. The state’s integrated transportation system ensures companies can easily send South Carolina-made products anywhere in the world. As a result, the automotive industry also dominates the state’s exports. In 2024, South Carolina led the United States in the export of both completed passenger vehicles and tires, reaffirming its reputation as a leading global destination for the automotive industry.
One of the companies anchoring South Carolina’s strong standing in the automotive industry is Volvo Cars. In 2015, the company announced it selected Ridgeville, South Carolina to establish its first manufacturing facility in the Western hemisphere. Since breaking ground a decade ago, Volvo launched the S60, its first vehicle assembled in America and later began producing the EX90. Earlier this year, Volvo announced it would also add its popular XC60 to the production line at the Ridgeville plant, reinforcing the company’s commitment to South Carolina.
Volvo is just one of the many Swedish companies that have found success in South Carolina. From 2017-2024, Swedish companies accounted for over $1 billion in announced capital investment, representing more than 2,500 new jobs created throughout the state.
For decades, South Carolina has maintained a strong presence on the global stage, welcoming companies from around the world. The state is home to more than 1,100 operations of international firms and over 800 operations of European firms. With representatives on the ground in Europe, South Carolina offers strong support for companies looking to establish a presence in the state through its Munich-based Europe Office. This year, the state’s Europe Office for economic development is celebrating its 50th anniversary, along with five decades of partnerships, dedication and shared success between the Palmetto State and European firms.
A trusted partner throughout the entire business life cycle, South Carolina remains committed to the success of its companies, from launch to legacy. A prime, U.S. East Coast location coupled with pro-business policies, a low cost of doing business and competitive incentives reinforce that South Carolina offers the ultimate business advantage. There is no better home for European companies looking to start, grow, and build a legacy than South Carolina.
South Carolina Department of Commerce is the main conference partner at SLD2025. If you wish to get in contact with the Europe office ahead of the conference please contact info@fkg.se
